Are you or a loved one considering an intensive outpatient program (IOP) as a treatment option?

According to the US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health, IOPs are an essential part of the continuum of care for alcohol and drug use disorders. They are as effective as inpatient treatment for most individuals seeking care. Recovery is not an easy process, and handling emotions can be especially difficult at this point in the journey to sobriety.

STAGES OF ADDICTION TREATMENT

The American Society of Addiction Medicine has defined the five levels of treatment as part of a “continuum of care.”

  1. Intervention Services
  2. Outpatient Services
  3. Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) / Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP)
  4. Residential or Inpatient Treatment Services
  5. Medically Managed Intensive Inpatient Treatment Services

INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT PROGRAMS: WHAT IS IT?

Intensive outpatient programs are a form of treatment that allows individuals to maintain the comfort of home and the routine of daily life while working towards an early recovery.

An IOP is designed to address the needs of a person who is undergoing drastic changes intending to make these changes permanent. Having support from trained professionals and a group of others who are dealing with similar issues, IOPs provide a safe place to move forward into long-term recovery.

What To Expect

The care received by an intensive outpatient program will vary depending on the facility and provider. Generally, it consists of 10 to 12 hours of group and individual therapy each week, with encouraging participation in a 12-step program. Sessions occur on-site at a medical or therapeutic facility.

Clients in IOPs usually visit a facility three to four times per week, often for three hours at a time. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) mentions that most programs require 9 to 20 hours of participation per week. An IOP provides a higher level of care than standard outpatient programs, meaning more time spent in treatment each week.

At Better Life Recovery & Wellness, we offer customized therapy programs for the individual client. Therapy can treat an individual’s mental, emotional, physical and behavioral concerns including, but not limited to: anxiety, depression, addiction, abuse, work issues and relationship issues.

We provide the following services for our patients:

  • Individual Therapy
  • Family Programming
  • Wellness Programs
  • Group Counseling
  • Life Skills Workshops
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
  • Outpatient Program (OP)

WHO SHOULD GO TO AN IOP?

It may be time to look into therapy services if your loved one is experiencing problems that limit the activities they would typically do. It is highly recommended that they do not wait until these issues and the corresponding symptoms become too severe.

People often have family or work commitments that prevent them from entering a full-time treatment program. It is harder for them to leave their current responsibilities behind to pursue treatment. For these people, IOPs are the best choice. They receive the benefits of getting intensive treatment while being able to reside at home.

The ideal candidate for intensive outpatient treatment lives in a safe home environment. The home environment should consist of being surrounded by encouraging family members and friends who support their loved one during recovery efforts.

It is best for the person trying to recover from an addiction to not be in an environment with people who abuse substances. It is recommended to get the person away from triggers in case of a relapse.

IOPs are generally not recommended for those with severe cases of addiction. Commonly, these cases are referred to as inpatient treatment since they require more immersive treatment and 24-hour supervision.
